For Pets who Travel in Style: Sleepypod

If you always give your pet the finest things, check out Sleepypod—a carrier for Very Important Pets. Marketed as a mobile pet bed, Sleepypod is much more luxurious than your average pet bed or carrier.

What makes Sleepypod so indulgent?

To start—the super comfortable shearling bedding. Sleepypod.com offers a low wattage heater that slips under the bedding to keep your pet warm in winter. Or you can remove the plush bedding and insert a mesh hammock allowing cool air to circulate around your spoiled pet.

Aside from having these useful features, Sleepypod is the coolest pet carrier I’ve ever seen. The round, over-the-shoulder style is innovative and fresh. If you and your pet like to look good, you’ll appreciate the striking colors, flawless stitching, and tiny details like the little lamb on the label.

My favorite part of the Sleepypod is the optional Cloudpuff blanket. Made of the softest material, this pet blanket caused a spat between my cat and dog until they finally fell asleep on it together. It’s great to know that when my pets need to leave the house, they can take this little piece of home.

Sleepypod is a lavish everyday bed that goes a step further. When you zip on the dome top, your pet can take its comfy bed on the road. This carrier also has seatbelt loops for extra secure riding in the car. Sleepypod is the ultimate home away from home.

Head to Sleepypod.com to see for yourself. Use coupon code swank08 to get 10% off your order. Hurry! Offer expires January 31.

Custom Made Collars

I have found the coolest collars. Initial It Online has embroidered gifts including hand made collars just in time for the holidays. Debbie at Initial It Online is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet and she has a very special deal this month. If you buy a collar you'll get a free Christmas or Hanukkah bandana.

Her collars are really durable. The dee rings are welded shut so they will not open up if your dog sees another dog and decides to pull on the leash and run. You can spray them with cleanser and throw in the washer. Matching leashes are available on the website. There is a quide on how to measure and the ordering is set up to have a totally custom collar made to the exact measurement for your dog with your choice of lots of thread colors.

I got mine in the mail and was totally pleased with the construction and look of it. Tell Debbie that Swanky Pup sent you and check out her variety of gorgeous custom collars.

Give your dog a taste of Philly

Do you love Philadelphia Cheesesteaks? If you have ever had one, you probably do. Now, thanks to Grandma Lucy's Philly Cheesesteak Freeze-dried Meatballs, your dog can enjoy them too!

Handmade from all-natural ingredients, including USDA approved meat and fresh herbs, these treats are made with human-grade ingredients and are even safe for us people to eat (though I didn't try them myself). Grandma Lucy's meatballs are made with 100% natural ingredients and all that you will find in them is USDA Beef, Bread Crumbs, Mozzarella Cheese, Egg, and Garlic. Also, they are MUCH healthier than the typically dog treats that are filled with processed meats, by-products, salt and tons of preservatives.

Made from only the best ingredients, your dog is going to flip for these treats. When I first gave my dog Baxter the meatball he gobbled it up in seconds and came running over for more, and since I know they are healthy, of course I gave in and gave him just one more! Now, if Baxter even sees me heading towards the container he runs over and starts whimpering!

If you are looking for the ultimate way to reward your dog (with food, that is) then Grandma Lucy's Philly Cheesesteak Meatballs are exactly what you need. So share the taste of Philly Cheesesteaks with your dog - they are going to love it!

Oh, and GO PHILLIES!!!!

Gorgeous, affordable stuffed toys for your dog

Over the past couple of months, I had the exciting opportunity to try out a number of beautiful Room-Candy stuffed toys with my dog, Maggie. Not only did she have a blast with her new toys, but her cousin Baxter and numerous friends got to try them out too.

The consensus? These amazing, special dog toys are fun, colorful, beautiful, and enjoyable by each and every dog.

When I first received these toys, I couldn't get over how these were DOG toys. I mean, they could easily pass for kids stuffed animals, they are so pretty and detailed. Millie the caterpillar (pictured to the right) was a huge hit with all of the dogs. The multiple squeakers, lots of legs to chew, and fun shape was enough for all of the dogs to jump numerous feet in the air to try to get it. Also enjoyed were Freddie the Frog and Dundee the Crocodile (though they really would have had fun with any of them!)

There are toys for all types and sizes of dog, in all different price ranges. We also love these adorable doughnut treat toys that look good enough we may want to try them ourselves! And while we're talking about doughnuts, we can't help but mention the adorable, eye-catching "doughnut" donut dog bed. What a fun and comfy spot for your dog to enjoy! (Available in pink or chocolate, the center cushion is removable, and both the center cushion and outer bumper zips off for easy washing.)

Check out all of the fabulous toys and beds, as well as other accessories that Room-Candy has to offer. We know you will enjoy any purchase from this site! Enjoy!

Looking for a fun, interactive way to flex your brain? Check out the dog puzzles on the National Geographic’s website. With over 100 dog photos to choose, it is difficult to do just one puzzle! The site also features the dog match game, a highly addictive dog photo matching game.

You can even upload a photo of your own canine companion for upcoming features. The site features beautiful photos of different puppies and dogs. Be warned, however, this site is quite addictive. I spent the better half of my afternoon matching dogs and browsing the dog photo gallery. And the best part? It is all free!

Bye bye shedding, hello Furbuster

When you buy/rescue a dog there are several factors that you are accepting - picking up poop, taking them to the vet, going on walks and having your pooch shed all over your clothing/house/car. I never thought shedding would bother me much, but after years of never leaving the house without dog fur attached to my clothing, needing a lint brush handy at all times and vacuuming twice a week to keep clumps of fur off of the carpet, I must admit, it was becoming an issue. Now I know that there is an easy solution to this problem, with The Bamboo Furbuster De-Shedding System.

The Furbuster is one of the only de-shedding tools with interchangeable stainless steel blades so that you can get the most bang for your buck and use the same tool for your large dog, your small dog and your cat! You can also change blade sizes to fit the area of your pooch that you are working on and with the comfortable angled-handle, you'll be finished brushing before your hand gets tired. Designed to removed excess fur and undercoats, it is amazing to watch the fur just fall off your pup as you run it through their coat and with regular use you will notice a significant decline in shedding. I can't ask for more than that!

I have been using the Furbuster on my pooch Baxter and while he normally hates being brushed, he actually sits calmly while I run it through his fur like he is getting a massage. Watch the Furbuster video to see this tool and action and find it now at Doctors Fosters & Smith starting at just $25.

Homemade Dog Biscuits for a Good Cause

I recently read an article about two brothers who started baking dog biscuits to bring to dogs at the shelter they volunteered at. These boys saw how the dogs loved the homemade, yummy biscuits, and started selling them at the shelter to make more money for the animals. The business started to take off and the boys started a website so others could purchase their biscuits for their own animals, while contributing to help homeless animals find homes. Wolf 'em down dog biscuits is the result.

Woof 'em Down Dog Biscuits are made fresh in the boy's "barkery" using flour, cornmeal, apple sauce, peanut butter, milk, eggs and sesame seeds. They contain no preservatives, and come in fun shapes like fire hydrants, dog houses and bones. They are available in 4 sizes, from a gift bag (5 biscuits) to a large bag (40 biscuits). And the profits from this endeavor go to Aiding and A-Petting, a pet rescue organization.

Place an order today and support these young boys and their love of animals and making a difference. Your dogs will love the biscuits too!

GPS for dogs

How cool would it be to be able to track your dog's location 24 hours a day? With the Zoombak GPS you can do just that and not only is it accurate, it's in real time meaning what you see is exactly where your dog is. Imagine being able to find your dog if he or she was lost. I can't comprehend a better way to have peace of mind if my dog were lost.

The Zoombak does require a monthly service fee but you are notified immediately by text message or e-mail if you dog leaves a certain zone. You can't get safer than that.

The Zoomback is available at Walmart and costs $199.97 but comes with free shipping with site-to-store option.

A little something to help ease the pain of losing a beloved pet

It's not easy when someone you know looses a pet. Let's face it, our furry friends are part of our families and make a lasting imprint on our hearts. We treat them like any other member of the family and when they are taken from us, its devastating.

While kind words and cards are thoughtful they are not long lasting. Memorial coins, however, are. A company called At-Choo.com makes wonderful coins with thoughtful sayings on them that can help ease the pain of losing your friend. Whether you keep one or more of these coins in a special box or you carry them around with you, you will feel a sense of tranquility knowing that while you no longer have your pet, the thought of them will always be with you.

At-Choo.com makes other items as well that can be worn (i.e. jewelry) and other gift ideas that are worth taking a look at. There is something for everyone.

Fashionable Harnesses

If your dog is like mine, and pulls away from you when you try to take him/her out for a walk, a harness rather than a collar might be best. I hate hearing that choking sound they make when they would rather pull you instead of walk beside you.

I recently found a website called Bowhausnyc.com. They sell beautiful harnesses for dogs to wear when walking around town. They cost a little bit more than your average harness, however, because they are made off genuine leather and they are lined with cozy sherpa lining. The harness attaches to your dog with buckles that are easy to adjust for the perfect fit. It also come with D-rings to hook your leash onto it.

Bowhausnyc.com
also carries leashes (yes, you are able to coordinate the leash to match the harness), collars, collar charms, travel bags and bowls, and beds with matching crate covers. All of their things are very well made and are made from the highest quality materials.

When ordering directly off the Bowhausnyc.com website, be sure to enter Bow20 from now through December 25th and receive 20% off your order. Remember, Hanukkah and Christmas are right around the corner. Here's your chance to do some shopping and save a little too.

Clean Dog!

One of the joys of being a dog parent are the twice-daily walks, especially in the fall with the cooler temperatures and the changing leaves.Walking is a time for bonding, exploring and in some cases just getting down right dirty, which can happen when, walking on Forbidden Drive located in the Wissahickon Valley Park.

While chasing frogs and fish in the river is great fun, the mud and grime that accumulates—not so much. Thankfully, Mrs. Meyers, my favorite household cleaner, also has a line of organic, natural pet products. Gentle Pet Wipes have saved many a day after a vigorous walk in the park. Theses wipes are fantastic for quickly wiping down your dog and they smell great—Clary Sage and Chamomile! These wipes also are gentle enough to wipe around the eyes, ears and nose. And at only $5.99, it pays to keep an extra container in the car! Get the wipes here.

Found: The Perfect Harness

I was delighted to find Chloe's Custom Harnesses online a few weeks ago. Long have I been looking for a robust harness for Axel, my 30 plus pound wire fox terrier. Axel loves his walks, but he is a puller - and if you saw us walking down the street, you may very well ask yourself - who is taking who for a walk? I have never liked to restrain Axel by his collar out of fear of hurting his neck - hence my never-ending search for the perfect harness. My definition of a perfect harness is one that is easy to get into, fits well and doesn't come off easily until after you are safely at home.

The owner of Chloe's Custom Harnesses, Jane Callison, was inspired by her 3 pound Chihuahua Chloe who is so tiny, Jane could not find any harness to fit her. So being a "retired" seamstress Jane was forced out of retirement and Chloe's Custom Harnesses was born. Now any dog, of any size, can enjoy a great looking and fitting harness!

Jane sent me two custom harnesses (pictured left and below right) - a summer harness for Axel, and a beautiful girl harness for Axel's friend Lucy - a dachshund. The harnesses are extremely well made - Jane pre-washes and dries all her fabrics before cutting. She also uses heavy duty velcro to hold the neck and chest, with a 2-1/2" to 3" inch lap over. They are very secure! And each harness has a heavy D-ring to attach the leash.

Axel's harness fitted him perfectly and was a breeze to put on - you just slip the harness over the head and fasten it around the chest! What a win for a terrier who hates being fussed over! Plus it stayed on despite rough-housing with big dogs at the dog park. Lucy's Mom was crazy about her harness and it was a big hit at the rest homes where Lucy works as a therapy dog. Lucy's harness was lined with fleece to create a warm, snuggly coat and harness in one. A wonderful addition to any dog's winter wardrobe.

Summer harnesses range in price from $10-$12. Boy/Girl harnesses like Lucy's range in price from $20-$22. Shipping is included, so these are a great bargain, especially as they are all custom-fitted! Jane has generously offered all Swanky Pup readers a $2.00 discount - just mention Swanky Pup with your order.

Going to be in the sun? Don't forget the sunscreen!

We hear all the time, how important it is to remember to apply sunscreen if you are going to be outside. I know for myself, that I always have it on my face since it is in my moisturizing lotion. Shouldn't your pets have the same protection from the sun? We don't usually think about it because they are covered in fur, but yes, our pets also need sun protection.

You can find sunscreen for your pet on a website called Epi-Pet.Com. They carry all kinds of skin products. Their products can help if your pet is itchy, smelly, or has skin sores. The products were created by a veterinarian, Dr. Michael Fleck, who has 30+ years of experience. In addition, he is also a licensed esthetician. The combination of these two professions allowed him to come up with a skin care line for pets that would help in decrease the look of aging in pets.

Just like you take care of your skin with your own skin regime, your pets deserve the best in skin care too. Check out the products at Epi-Pet.Com. To place an order call the number on the website. When you order $25 or more worth of products, you'll receive 10% off the order.
