How slow can you go?

Is your dog a total chowhound, who eats his food so fast he barely leaves time to chew? This behavior is not only a little disturbing to watch but it is also unhealthy for dogs since it can cause bloat which is a potentially fatal condition. The Brake-Fast Bowl is an amazing new bowl that will help slow down your pooch so they can enjoy their food and stay healthy too.

The Brake-Fast bowl works in two ways. First, it has strategically placed obstructions (pegs) so that your dog has to take the time to eat around them and get the food out from between the pegs. Second, it slides around on the floor while your dog is chowing down so that your pup cannot plunge its face into the bowl without it sliding away a bit.

We tested this bowl on a very hungry Sheltie named Buster, who was eating his food so quickly he was throwing up after meals. On his first attempt eating out of the bowl it took him about 5 minutes longer than usual to finish his meal (his normal time was about 45 seconds). I was extremely happy with how well the bowl slowed down his eating so that he actually had time to taste the premium food that he gets fed. Over the span of about a week he did get a bit faster at eating once he figured out how to the bowl worked but it still slows him down a lot and we are very satisfied with the results and he no longer throws up after meals.

The Brake-Fast Bowl comes in plastic and the new metal design and is durable and dishwasher safe. Also, it comes in three sizes so dogs large and small can enjoy the benefits of slower eating (for those flatter face pups out there, go with the small) and it works with kibble or canned food. If your dog eats like the food is going out of style then the Brake-Fast bowl is the answer you have been searching for.

Your dog can look like a rock star!

Sometimes I like to dress my dog in different outfits. He has a lot of collars and matching leashes, as well as, t-shirts, tank tops and sweaters. Recently, I was in a "punky" kind of a mood and got him a rock t-shirt from K9duds.com.

This shirt is great, not to mention cool. Not only do they make t-shirts, but they also make tank tops and hoodie sweatshirts too for those cooler days and nights. What I like most about K9duds.com is that not only can your dog look and feel like a rock star, but so can you. Yes, you and your pup can be "twins" while walking the streets in matching rock star shirts. How cool! For sure, heads will turn when people see that!

Many of the items from K9duds.com, can be found in various retailers across the the United States, Europe, Canada and Japan. Of course you can also purchase items online. There is free shipping on all orders over $200.

Healthy treats for healthy pets

When I'm looking for tasty new treats for my kids, I always carefully check the labels. I don't want a lot of sugar or fat, and I definitely prefer organic. So why should treats for my dogs be any different?

That's why I was happy to find robbie dawg. It is a Brooklyn-based company that specializes in baking organic dog biscuits and cat treats. These biscuits come in 15 different flavors, and are perfect for your allergic pet or one with a sensitive digestive system.

They contain no wheat, corn or soy and have no artificial ingredients. They also have no wheat or rice gluten, so you know you're giving your dog a healthy snack.

You can choose from such fun flavors as Arroz con Pollo or Peppermint Bark. Robbie dawg also makes 3" tins called Let's Take Your Dog for a Walk, which contain bite-sized training bits that fit neatly in your pocket.

And for those of you who like to bake your own treats, you can order The Everything Cooking for Dogs book, written by Lisa Fortunato, owner/founder of robbie dog. You can order a pre-made NYC Style Pizza Biscuit mix to make it even easier!

Functional, fashionable furniture for your pooch

Have you ever gone into a dog lovers house and been overwhelmed by how much of their house is dedicated to their pooch? Yes, I want to give my dog the best, but I do not want the style of my house to “go to the dogs”. Now, with the elegant, modern and stylish Wowo pet furniture you do not need to sacrifice your décor to give your dog the best.

I recently received the raised feeder from Vurv Designs and I was extremely impressed with the craftsmanship, style and sleek design. Not only are raised feeders better for your dog’s health by reducing neck and back strain and easing digestion, but when it is made out of a gorgeous curved wood platform, it is better for your decor too. It is more than a dog bowl, it is a work of art that will add to your room instead of taking away from it.

The quality of the Wowo feeder also soars above the rest. It is hand made to last by true furniture craftsmen using real wood veneers and is available in bamboo, cherry, wenge and aluminum finish. Also, it is not mass-produced so yours is sure to be an exclusive piece. Everybody loves cake... even your pooch!

Who doesn't love cake? When you go to a birthday party, it is really the only reason you hang around until the end, right? Now, your dog doesn't have to drool any longer while you eat cake. Your dog can have some too.

Puppycake.com makes cake mix that even I (believe me... I am no Betty Crocker) can make. The mix comes in two flavors, banana and carob... each one will make your dogs mouth water. Both cake mixes are made with only the best ingredients for the good health of your dog. The directions are clearly written out for you on the box and only need a few added ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry. The cakes come with frosting too (that’s the best part of the cake), that again is very simple to make.

So maybe your puppy is having a birthday or you just want to let your pooch know how much you do love ‘em. Make them a cake from Puppycake.com.

My dog looks swanky in her shimmer necklace!

When I first thought about my dog, Maggie, wearing a beaded, shimmery necklace, I didn't know how I would like it. She sort of looks like a boy (at least, that's what people tell me) and I wasn't sure if jewelry and her would mesh.

When I got my adorable beaded necklace from Shimmer, Glimmer, & Sniff, I immediately saw how adorable and pretty she looked wearing jewelry! I tried on the necklace about 4 days ago, and she has been wearing it since, not wanting me to take it off. Everyone who has been over since trying it on agrees -- she looks so cute in her pretty necklace!

Shimmer, Glimmer & Sniff makes adorable beaded jewelry for your pet. Made of glass beads, the jewelry is affordable and comfortable for your pet to wear (very important!!!) Maggie loves her Shimmer Pink necklace from the Shimmer and Glitter collection. It is a three-strand braided design made specific to her measurements with an adjustable clasp. Check out all 4 collections to find the style that suits you and your dog best!

Swanky Pup of the Week!

This week’s swanky pup is the very adorable, 1.5 year old Cody, brother to last weeks swanky pup Toby. The both have that beautiful, shiny black lab coat (whatever their mom is feeding them is doing wonders for their fur) but their personalities could not be more different! Cody is a sweetheart who loves to follow his family around to make sure that he does not miss anything (like yummy food falling on the floor).

Likes: Annoying his brother Toby, people food, rawhide bones, sleeping on his favorite recliner, being with his family

Dislikes: Being left out of the fun

Say Cheese!

It's not uncommon for people to comment on the amount of photographs I have taken of my dog. Ok, I admit it... I like taking a lot of pictures. I usually compile them all into a book, designated just for my dog (and usually it goes unopened). Until now...

At Picturedpets.com, you can find all kinds of pet picture frames to display all your pictures of your furry friend. Oh, and it's not just dogs either. They have a wide variety of cat frames to choose from as well. All the frames at Picturedpets.com are made from either pewter, wood, glass or metal. You can even find frames with a little glitz, if that is your style.

These frames would make a great gift for a new puppy owner, or an older puppy owner who just has so many pictures and no where to put them... like me!

So, surf over to Picturedpets.com and find a new picture frame for your fur baby. After all, your pet is a member of your family and should also be displayed for all to see. At checkout, mention "swankypup" and receive 10% off any purchase.

Look cute and stay dry this Spring!

You know the old saying, "April showers bring May flowers?" Well, April (and Spring) are just around the corner, so now is the time to get ready for all of those wet walks in the rain.

One of the cutest raincoats I have seen for dogs is this adorable Nantucket Stripe raincoat from Scooter's Friends. This fully reversible raincoat has water-repellent Italian fabric on the outside, and is lined with a classic Ralph Lauren Nantucket stripe cotton on the reverse. With denim nickel eyelet trim and a pocket for treats, your dog will certainly make some heads turn in this beautiful coat. Available in a range of sizes (8 through 18) and 4 different styles, you are sure to find one that is perfect for your dog! The best part? They are washable! How can you go wrong?!

Want to buy one of these adorable raincoats? Check out a store near you or purchase from one of their online retailers.

Introducing spring styles from Owen and Olivia

With winter winding down and spring right around the corner, it is time to get a jump on the hottest styles coming out for this spring. We just can’t get enough of the latest spring styles from one of our favorite collar designers Owen and Olivia.

For boys this spring we love the black crowns on red fabric collar and leash combo to help you show off your furry prince. If your little boy is a total stud like my dog Baxter, then this collar is a must-have! It is well made and sturdy but also comfortable enough to leave on your pup all of the time so he can make a fashion statement even while lounging around on the couch.

For the ladies, this beautiful lilac collar with white polka dots along with its matching leash is our top choice for spring. The collar is vibrant and feminine, featuring pretty light gray webbing for contrast and it will compliment any fur collar perfectly. So if you have a female pampered pooch this collar is the spring fashion trend for you.

We love the high quality, high style collars from Owen and Olivia and their collars are not only absolutely adorable, but they are also proudly made in the USA and are 100% guaranteed for quality and craftsmanship. Also, if it gets dirty during a play session at the dog park all you have to do is hand wash it with detergent and let it drip dry and you will be back in business. So what are you waiting for? Spring is right around the corner and it is time to stock up on these spring essentials from Owen and Olivia.

Great treat and low fat too!

We all want our dogs to be happy and most importantly, healthy. My dog has a food allergy to chicken, so I am very careful about what I give to him. As a result, my eyes are always open for vegetarian treats for my dog.

I found a website called Bluedogbakery.com, that makes not only vegetarian treats, but they are low fat too. All the treats made by the bakers at Bluedogbakery.com are all natural and contain no animal by-products, artificial flavorings or colorings and no artificial preservatives. This stuff is about as healthy as you can get.

Bluedogbakery.com makes treats for all size dogs. I especially like the small treats. They are easy to take on the run and they are great to stuff into my dog's favorite toy. If you are a new puppy parent, theses treats are just what you need to help in training.

You can purchase these terrific treats at various stores. Check out the Bluedogbakery.com website for a complete listing.

Celebrating St. Patty's Day in Style!

I love getting my dog dressed up for holidays. This year, for St. Patty's Day, my dog Maggie will be sporting a new shamrock collar compliments of Swankypet.net.

These adorable, well-made collars are the only ones my dog wears. They are light-weight and comfortable, adjustable, and of course, stylish. I love the silver buckle -- made of contoured zinc die cast side release buckles, durable slip lock buckles, cast D-rings and heavy nickel plate swivel snap hooks.

There are tons of fabrics to choose from, including seasonal designs for the upcoming holidays. Browse all of the cool fabric selections and I'm sure you'll find something perfect to suit your dog's personality.

Also worth mentioning are the gourmet dog treats. My dog gobbled these yummy carob-dipped treats up in about two seconds. She loved them! Order some special treats for your pup or get some seasonal treats for an extra-special holiday surprise. Yum!

Baby, it's cold outside!

Living in the northeast, we are fortunate enough to experience all of the seasons. Spring is warm, summer can be hot and unbearable, fall is chilly and crisp and winter... well, can be down right miserable! It can be even worse if you don't have a warm coat to wear.

Dogs feel the same way. They still have to go out, and they want to be warm when they have to leave the comfort of their warm house, or in my dog's case, his fleece bed with a hood. There is no question in my mind that my dog is warm enough, now that he has a custom made fleece coat from Passionpets.com.au.

This coat is awesome. It covers his very long back, and it even has a little flap at the neck that can stand up to keep the wind and cold off his neck and the bottom of his head. The padded straps are fastened with velcro for easy on and off.

The coats from Passionpets.com.au are all handmade in Australia from the finest quality polar fleece. They are so soft to the touch and the looks of them make heads turn. When ordering your dog's new fleece coat from Passionpets.com.au, make sure you add in the comment section "the swanky pup" and you'll get 10% off your order.

Bathroom linen... doggie style!

I recently got the urge to redecorate the bathroom my daughter uses. Since she loves dogs, I thought about looking for dog themed bathroom accessories (shower curtain, rug, soap dispenser, toothbrush holder, etc).

On the website kayceeskorner.com, I found fantastic towels that I know would go great in the bathroom. What's better, they come in a variety of colors to match whatever colors I am going to accent the room with. Each towel is 100% cotton and measures 30"x54" in length. They are machine washable and the stencil that adorns the edge of the towel, will not come off in the wash.

These towels from kayceeskorner.com are not only useful for people, but can also be for your dog to use. Now that the weather is getting nicer here in the northeast, my dog and I are taking more and more walks outside. More often than not, he comes back muddy and wet. The towel is great to have by the door, so I can give him a quick rub down before letting him roam the house.

Order your towel today from kayceeskorner.com and receive free shipping -- no coupon code necessary.

Dear Diary...

Many people love to keep a journal or diary around so they can write things down that are of importance to them. So, why not have one for your dog too?

At Uptowndog.net you can buy a journal to write down things that happen in your dogs life. It's similar to a baby book, but for your dog. There are pages for photographs of your dog, small envelopes to store your dogs important papers and keepsakes in, and pages after pages of information to fill in about your dog.

We all consider our dogs as members of the family. It's important to document their lives as well -- the good and the well... not so good. This book will guide you to do just that and more. You'll want to leave it out on your coffee table for all to see.

When you are purchasing your copy of the doggie journal on the Uptowndog.net website, be sure to write in the "special instructions" section, "FREE GIFT". In addition to your new journal, you'll also receive FREE doggie notecards.

Celebrate your dogs birthday in style! (And other mouthwatering treats for your pooch!)

I recently discovered the amazing hand-made treats at Bing's Barkin' Bakery at a Pet Expo. The treats caught my eye from across the room with their bright colored icing and beautiful design and appearance.

Aimee, the owner, bakes all of the treats to order, so they are fresh and yummy for your dog. They are made with all natural, human grade ingredients. And they offer a great selection of treats, including bones, cookies, donuts, pretzels, cakes, and more.

My favorite item is definitely the decorated cakes for your dogs birthday. What a cute idea to celebrate your dogs birthday with their doggie friends and a special birthday bone cake. Then, to finish it off, give all your doggie friends a little bag of treats to take home as a party favor! You will certainly be the talk of your neighborhood!

For those Irish doggies out there, make sure you check out the beautiful (and yummy, I'm sure) St. Patty's Day treats in the seasonal section of the website.

Try out anything from Bing's Barkin' Bakery and receive a FREE bag of treats! Use code BBBSWANK in the message area when you place your order.

Swanky Pup of the Week!

This handsome boy is Chip, a very strong and athletic Jack Russell Terrier from Florida. Chip is an excellent swimmer and he jumps in the pool numerous times a day to swim laps (and his sister Zoe chases him around the pool while he swims).

Likes: Swimming, companionship, his mommy, his fur siblings, sitting on top of the couch and vegging out, watching Eagles games with his human dad and brother

Dislikes: Being cold and shivering when he gets out of the pool

Celebrate St. Patty's day in punk rock style

St. Patty’s day is right around the corner and now is the time to start shopping for that perfect outfit to help your pooch celebrate in style. My choice for Baxter is the Iron Cross tee from Punk Rock Dogg. It is a black fitted t-shirt with a large, green iron cross and it is perfect for the dog that wants to celebrate St. Patty’s day with an attitude.

The shirt is made out of high-quality cotton and the construction on the shirt is well done and impressive. I took Baxter’s measurements and based on his chest size I ordered him a small, which to my pleasant surprise, fit him better than any t-shirt I have ever gotten for him (he is a mutt and half dachshund so he is hard to fit). Between the amazing quality, the fit of this t-shirt and the punk rock edge, this is a must-have for the deviant dog.

Not in the St. Patty’s day spirit? Not to worry, the Iron Cross shirt comes in 4 different colors and they have sizes both large and small. Also, they make t-shirts for people too so you and your pooch can match!

Punk Rock Dogg is having a 20% off sale now until March 17th pricing this t-shirt at only $15.20!

Trendy handmade hair bows

Does your dog have lots of hair that is constantly falling into her eyes and face? If so, then you need either very frequent trips to the groomer or hair bows to control the chaos. You will be hard pressed to find more stylish and functional hair bows than those made by Puppy Kisses.

Each hair bow is hand made in the USA featuring fun and beautiful prints and they are decorated with a stylish center rhinestone or coordinating accent. Unlike other hair bows, these are made with a metal barrette closure, so they will be easy to put on and take off without ripping any hair or hurting your pooch like a rubber band would. Also, they will stay in all types of fur including thin, thick, curly, smooth and wiry. My pooch Baxter has thin and wiry hair and the bow even held strong in his fur!

There are tons of prints and styles to choose from, so skip the groomer and buy these adorable hair bows from Puppy Kisses to help you manage your pup’s mane in style.

A cafe style drink... for your pup!

In the summer, my husband and I often head to a coffee shop that has outdoor seating so we can bring our dog a long with us. My husband I get a delicious drink to sip while we people watch. My dog, however, gets his usual... water. Well, this does not have to be the case any longer.

My dog can now enjoy a capoochino or a waggalatte from javadumutt.com. These drinks start off as a beef or chicken flavored paste that you mix with water, stick in the microwave for a few seconds and serve warm in a dog dish or coffee mug (that part is up to you). Now, of course, you wouldn't give this drink to your dog in place of water. It is meant to be a treat. In a standard serving, the waggalatte drink has only 20 calories in it, while the capoochino has only 15 calories. This is half the number of calories of some popular dog treats.

The paste comes in one pound tubs, that makes about 75 servings. After you open a tub, it can be kept in the refrigerator for up to 3 months.

When checking out, enter coupon code 0308 for 20% off your order. But, act fast... it's only good through March 31st.
