Treat Jars

I love doggy biscuit treat jars. I have some unique ones now but the jars at Oh My Dog Supplies are absolutely gorgeous. They have hand painted jars from nationally recognized designer, Alyson Whitney and get this, they're dishwasher safe! You can't usually get that on hand painted items. The prices are a tad higher than what you'd normally pay for a treat jar but they claim that you won't find their products at a pet store and if you do, they'll pay you your money back plus $100! They have a 6 month return policy and for just $5 more you can have your pet's name hand painted onto the treat jar. I think they are definitely unique and gorgeous. They also sell matching dog bowls and you can find most anything else you'd ever want when owning a furry friend.

A Bowl and Collar You Gotta Have!

So here's the scenario. It's a beautiful day and you and your furry, best friend decide to go to the dog park. You get there, your dog is having the time of his or her life and suddenly, thirst sets in. But wait, you realize that you only have a water bottle that you brought for yourself. What do you do?

Here's your solution. The Tazlab Aqua-Fur Bowl. This is the bowl to have, if you and your pooch are out and about. The Aqua-Fur bowl is a silicon bowl that looks like a regular dog bowl, but easily folds up into something that looks like origami and is so portable.

The Tazlab Aqua-Fur Bowl is dishwasher safe, microwave safe, it doesn't leak or wet out. It also holds 1 liter of water and weighs only 8 ounces. Need I say more?

Tazlab also makes these great collars that can actually safe your pet's life if caught in a life threatening situation. The collars are called Safe-T-Stretch. When the collars are not clipped with a leash, dogs able to slip free out of the collar if they need to. The collars come in all different collars and sizes.

When surfing around on the Tazlab.com website, be sure to click on the video icon to see just how the bowl and collars work. They are very informative and useful. I needed a quick tutorial on how to fold up the Aqua-Fur bowl. Now, it's a breeze.

Help the Animals Affected by Hurricane Ike!

Swanky Pup is committed to bringing you the best, most stylish and innovative dog-products and services available; however, today’s post strays a bit from the traditional product reviews to highlight the plight of the animals impacted by Hurricane Ike.

Hurricane Ike hit the Texas Gulf Coast 10 days ago and Texans continue to recover from the disaster. Animals impacted by Ike also are in need. The Houston Chronicle reports that many animals have been displaced as a result of the Hurricane. The Houston SPCA has set up a disaster response pet portal to help owners find their animals. They also have a wish list of items to help with the surge in animal population. In addition, the Special Pals Animal Shelter has taken in over 100 homeless pets that were evacuated from the Bay Area Pet Adoption Shelter and need donations to help the pets.

For more information, read here.

Get Organized!

I am all about organization. And I love any product that helps to keep things straight. (Around here, with two kids and two pets, things get a bit hectic!). That's why this Wags and Wiskers pet organizer is perfect for me! For less than $8, you get an adorable and very functional organizer that keeps track of all your pet records.

It is a softcover, 6 3/4 x 8 1/2" book featuring 8 pocket pages to store medical records, licenses, pedigrees, and more. Plus, 8 pages to note feeding and exercise schedules, personality traits, favorite toys, emergency contact information, and more for your pet sitter.

What a great item! (And if you buy 2, they are $6.98 each!) This makes a great gift for a new pet owner, as well.

Best Buddies

I was in Petco about a year ago, when little rubber smiley faced toys called Toy Buddies caught my attention. It might have been the bright colors, funny squeaky sound they emit when squeezed or the varied expressions on each toy that attracted me to them - and also the price, $1.99. So I bought one for Axel to see if he'd enjoy playing with it.

Thus began a love affair between Axel and these toys. Axel goes crazy with joy each time we give him a new latex Toy Buddy. He throws them up in the air, he squeezes them between his jaws making them squeak loudly and he dances about. Often they end up rolling under a table or furniture, and my husband and I will be forced to go down on our knees to rescue his buddy - all the while, his tail is wagging at a million wags per minute. Toy buddies usually last for about 2 hours before Axel kills the squeaker. At that point, he loses interest in the toy and usually buries them in his toy box which is full of squeaker-less Toy Buddies.

Toy buddies are not that easy to find, but they are well worth searching for. I have only seen them at Petco, usually near to the check out counter, not in the toy section. They are only about 5 inches in diameter, so probably only suitable for smallish dogs as they could be swallow risks for others. Also, not advisable for heavy toy destroyers - Axel has never ripped the latex but I'm sure more destructive dogs could - so always supervise your dog with this toy.

If you have a problem locating a Toy Buddy - give Petco the serial info:SKU #938424 - LB-2"PUPPY SWEETIE-LATEX. I encourage you all to try out a Toy Buddy - they are the cheapest and most fun dog toy around! Right Axel? Woof!

Bubble Buddy

There's only one thing that'll get Donner off of the pool float and that's bubbles. My dogs love chasing bubbles and now there's bubbles just for them. Bubble Buddy has scented bubbles in chicken, bubble gum and peanut butter. They're an inexpensive way of showing your dog the best time ever. I like to blow the bubbles myself but there is a mechanism that will do it for you. They have the Gazillion Bubbles - Fetch a Bubble you can get as well. Try it out and see if it isn't the best time your dog will have while getting exercise too.

Fabulous Reusable Bags!

I don't know about you, but I LOVE bags. I have a pretty nice collection of them in my closet. I have handbags, tote bags, overnight bags, and recently I have started a collection of reusable bags. Yes, I am doing my part in helping our earth by no longer using the plastic shopping bags.

So, when I found the Love Bag from Tailwagging Celebrations, I knew it had to be mine. I used it all summer to help schlep stuff back and forth to the shore. It was great. It's lightweight, attractive looking and, most importantly, it holds a lot of stuff.

The Love Bag will hold 10+ pounds and measures 13.5'' in length, 14'' in height, and 8.5'' gusset with a 21.5'' strap. The bag is water resistant , air permeable, fire resistant, recyclable and washable. The logo is on the bag is just too cute. That paw print in the center of the "O" is just perfect. Trust me, this is the bag you want to have around your house for all your carrying needs.

Ok, so are you ready for the best part? The Love Bag is only $5.00! Yes, you read correctly. How can you pass this up? For 5 bucks you could buy a whole bunch of them and keep one in your house, one in the car, one in the stroller, give one away to a friend or keep one in your bag. In addition, if you purchase 5 Love Bags (ok, do the math here... that's $25 for 5 bags), you'll get another one for FREE! It's a win win for everyone.

Beautiful, Custom Made Dog Collars and Leashes!

I admit—Jax is one pampered pooch—nothing but the best for our little fur ball. He has an awesome bed, good food and lots of toys to keep him mentally and physically engaged. Despite this, I have, admittedly, overlooked Jax’s neck attire. For the last 16 months, he has been wearing a durable, nylon green Martingale collar. Functionally, this collar works—I’m a big fan of the Martingale, a specialized dog collar that helps prevent a dog from slipping out of his collar. Fashionably, this nylon green collar is plain, old and dull.

Luckily, Jax no longer sports this boring old nylon collar of yesteryear because I found The ModDog—a retailer specializing in hand-made, custom designed collars, leashes and key fobs! Kyra, the founder and designer, created The ModDog after trying to find cute, stylish Martingale Collars for her Weimaraner puppy, Noodles. Kyra creates fashionable collars that will make your four-legged friend the hippest dog in the neighborhood!

The collars and leashes are all hand made and come in a variety of fun, bright designs such as Serendipity—an olive green and aqua swirl design; Pink Hot Cocoa—brown with pink dots; and
Wonder Dotsbright circles in primary colors on a white background.

As an added bonus, all of the collars are triple stitched at stress points to prevent breaking and prolong durability. And the collars are priced well—starting at $17 for a customized, handmade collar!

Jax is now sporting the Mojito collar, and he is the most handsome dog on the block with his swanky new collar. Jax and I highly recommend The ModDog’s custom designed collars and leashes. Jax is definitely the leader of the fashion pack with his new collar! Check out all of The ModDog’s fashion forward designs today.

Kyra welcomes questions about her products and she can be reached at kyra@themoddog.com or 770.310.9821.

This retractable and whimsical leash is made of durable plastic with an easy-grip handle. It has an extra-bright flashlight on the "nose" to help keep night walks safe! The nylon leash extends to 10 feet and retracts with the push of a button, and can accommodate dogs up to 100 lbs.

Don't Forget Dessert!

The Poodle has an enviable life. He gets all of his needs taken care of. He has a basket full of toys that any three year old would give his first ten teeth to own. He has a wardrobe that fills one whole drawer in my dresser and spills over to my closet. He has many friends with which he romps in the park each day. He has several beds in various areas of the house, all soft and fluffy with a favorite toy residing in each. And his meals are always served up on time. But, wait...it's not a meal without dessert, now is it?

It certainly isn't. And I found the perfect dessert while cruising the aisles of Pet Pros last week. It's from Natural Choice and it's called Healthy Desserts.

They come in a three ounce can, 100 calories per serving (if you're serving the whole can) made with all natural, wholesome ingredients (fruit, oatmeal, wheat flour, sunflower oil, cinnamon, spices, etc.) no added sugar, no fillers, no glutens, nothin' but real foods for your dog.

These are treats specifically made for owners who want the best nutrition for their dogs - but just can't help but spoil them. Now there is a compromise! The product is guaranteed by the company with a money back guarantee if your pet doesn't agree that this dessert is as yummy as they say it is!

But I'm telling you, they will!! The Poodle is was so enamoured of his Apple Torte dessert that he was refusing to eat his dinner in favor of dessert. Just like a little kid, he walked away from his usual dinner fare and sat his butt down in front of the shelves that held the cans and looked up at me as if to say, "This is the real deal, ma. Not that chicken and rice business." I had to wait him out. Eventually, when he realized dessert was not forthcoming, he went back to his bowl and ate his dinner. THEN he got his half can of dessert. He really seems to prefer the Apple Torte, although he has never turned his nose up at the Pumpkin Crumble, the Carrot Cake or the Berry Cobbler.
The Healthy Desserts line can be found in Petsmart, Petco, and your local specialized dog store of you can go to www.nutroproducts.com/ncdes-at.shtml and order it up from there.

This Nutro Natural Choice Dog Food Desserts is one of many top quality items offered by Natural Choice. I am sure you'll be the talk of the canine community if you serve this up at your doggie's next meal. You may find a posse of dogs at your back door clamoring for a little sweet treat! Send them home with a little note under their collars directing their owners to Healthy Desserts. You'll be the coolest mom ever. Dog mom, that is. I can't make any promises about your status as a cool human parent. That usually takes a fat wallet and a read taxi service!

Taste of the Wild

Long, long ago, our faithful friends were fierce predators, but over the centuries they became domesticated. But our dog's still share the DNA of the wolf. Taste of the Wild brand dog food offers your pet a diet dictated by his genes. It provides your pet with the kind of natural, balanced diet that he could find "in the wild."

Taste of the Wild comes in three flavors: High Prairie Canine with Roasted Bison & Roasted Venison; Pacific Stream Canine with Smoked Salmon and Wetlands Canine with Roasted Wild Fowl. Sounds yummy, no? As usual, upon receiving samples from the company, I turned to Axel, my faithful tester for his opinion. He seemed to enjoy all three flavors and happily munched away on the crunchy, fresh kibble. At some point he took a breath to give me his paws up salute.

Taste of the Wild is a grain free formula made with real roasted meats, fruits and vegetables. They also contain natural antioxidants to support a healthy immune system and overall health. This is a high quality dog food and as a result it is not found in pet supermarkets or chain stores - please visit their website to find a store near you that carries this brand. Also, read the many glowing testimonials on their website from grateful owners, many of whom had dogs with health issues, who have switched to Taste of the Wild, with excellent results.

Dog breed specific entrance signs

I often have a hard time finding breed specific items for breeds that aren't common. Take for instance my Belgian Malinois twins. They're not the easiest to find! However, check out the cute items at Dog Shoppe. I found the neatest entrance sign and what's better is that you can get it in your own breed of dog! Here's the belgian malinois sign.
According to their site:

Dog Breed Head & Paws originally designed & hand carved in wood.
Reproductions are cast in resin allowing the most delicate detail
of each carving mark to be retained and are then hand painted &
hand finished with painstaking care and detail creating a unique
one-of-a-kind collectible.

I think they're gorgeous and can't wait to get one.

A Place to Rest Your Weary Head

If you are like me, I love a great bed to sleep in. My bed at home is good, but the best bed I ever slept in was in New Hope, PA at a bed and breakfast my husband and I went to. It was fantastic!

My dog, also likes a good bed. He has a few around the house and one that we keep at the shore for him. He is one of those dogs that likes to burrow, so we need to be sure that his beds come with hoods.

Well, this summer, my dog got a real treat. He got a new bed from from a company called Lexie Lew. I have to say... as far as beds go, this bed is pretty great. No, there aren't any bells or whistles on it, it's just a comfy bed that comes with a hood for him to burrow and, best of all, it matches my room decor. Yes, I could get, if I choose, matching throw pillows for my sofa or my bed.

The entire pillow is machine washable. You can either unzip the cover and wash it alone, or throw the whole thing (the actual pillow part, too!) in the washing machine and dry on low. So easy, right? All the fabric are made from 100% cotton. Let's talk about the fabric choices. There is a very wide selection of really cool, fun and decorative prints to choose from. We have the Olive print... lots of colors on it.

Lexie Lew beds were featured in "The Stuff We Love" section of the summer issue of Modern Dog magazine. I can see why. This bed is the best.

If you order today, mention that your read the review on The Swanky Pup website, and receive 1 free matching throw pillow on any purchase of $120 or more. I promise... you're dog will love you even more for getting a bed from Lexie Lew.

What Dog are You?

I have discovered my inner pooch and she is a Beagle. Now you, too, can find your inner canine with Lori Lebda and Tami Bergerson’s book—What Dog Are You? Discovering Your Inner Pooch.

This delightful book takes the reader through three different quizzes: Pooch-Onality, Dapper Dogs and Biscuits or Bones. The quizzes are fun to complete and include such questions as this one from the Pooch-Onality quiz:

You’re twentieth in line at the dog wash. Do you….

  1. Demand to go home.
  2. Sniff the dog in front or behind you.
  3. Casually chat with dogs around you.
  4. Have everyone in line form a new playgroup.

Each response has a point value. Once you complete the quiz, tally up your score and to find your dog breed. After you complete the three quizzes, add all three scores together to obtain your overall dog score and dog breed.

Then you identify which one of the seven dog groups your breed is a member of: Gems, Trend Setters, Feisty Friends, Private Eyes, Guardians, Contenders or The Alphas. Each dog group contains characteristics and features that are prominent of the group. For example, my Beagle is a member of the Private Eyes. The authors characterize Private Eyes as standing out by their, “…constant scanning of the masses and alert manner.” The authors also include celebrities who may be in the different dog groups.

The book is entertaining and fun to read. The dog group descriptions are quite detailed. I always thought of myself as more of a bigger, fuzzier dog, such as St. Bernard or Golden Retriever. But after reading this book, I will embrace my inner Beagle and let her howl!

This book will make a great gift for dog lovers everywhere. And coming soon for cat lovers, What Cat Are You? Discovering Your Inner Feline, which will be available in early 2009.

Get the book at Amazon for $10.75 or electronically for $4.99.

The authors have generously provided six FREE copies of their book for six lucky Swanky Pup readers! Swanky Pup will randomly select six readers on September 24, 2008. To be entered in the drawing, simply sign up to receive our Swanky Pup Newsletter! Readers who already receive the Newsletter will automatically be entered into the drawing for to win one of the six books. Sign up by September 23, 2008 to be entered into the random drawing.

Good Teeth, Yummy Treat

Being a doting pet owner, I have often attempted to brush Axel's teeth as part of his daily health regimen. I say "attempted" because it is almost impossible to get him to cooperate. They don't call them fox terrors, I mean terriers, for nothing! I usually have to chase him around the house, tempt him with treats and then enlist my husband to hold him while I try to get him to show me his pearly whites.

I am thus immensely grateful for a reasonably new product on the market called Bright Bites - "fun daily dental treats." These star-shaped treats are the fun way to help keep your dog's teeth free of plaque and tartar. Developed by veterinarians, Bright Bites are the first step in promoting good oral hygiene, prevent gum disease, ensure whiter teeth and what most of us dog owners really appreciate - freshen dog breath!

The American Veterinary Medical Association has found that more than 80 percent of dogs show signs of oral disease before they reach their third birthday. What is most frightening is that plaque and tartar build-up can contribute to two serious health issues — heart disease and kidney disease. We as dog owners, need to take note, and ensure we take care of our best friend's dental health! Bright Bites give us a convenient way to improve our dog’s oral health.

Axel, my faithful product tester (pictured), tried a cinnamon, peppermint and spearmint Bright Bite treat (over 2 days) and gave it a big paws up! He liked the taste and ate them with relish - I think he really enjoyed the chewy texture. After getting a whiff of his breath after he'd finished his treat, I did detect an improvement as well.

Bright Bites are available in three different sizes for dogs who weigh up to 15 pounds, 15 to 40 pounds and more than 40 pounds. What I also like about them is that they are wheat gluten free, low in fat (3%), and highly digestible. They start at a measly 62c and can be found in pet stores around the country. Visit their website.

15% off at the Pampered Pup

The Pampered Pup, one of my favorite online designer doggie boutiques, has been under construction and revamping their website. To thank their loyal shoppers for their patience during construction they are currently offering 15% off with the use of the coupon code "CONSTRUCTION SALE" at checkout.

Happy shopping, swanky pups!

Dog booties!

Back before our 15 year old yellow lab passed away, he had a hard time getting around on our ceramic tile floors. The best thing we found to help out with this was doggie booties. They come in different styles, sizes and treads. I found that the booties with treads really helped Harley walk around easier. Dog-Booties.net has quite a few choices. A set is $30 and includes four booties. If you live in a cold part of the country you can consider getting these for your dog to be able to go outside in the snow. They'll keep those fuzzy paws nice and toasty and protect them from cuts and skins.

Your pet has so much to say!

Ever wonder what your pet is really thinking about? If they could talk, what would your dog or cat tell you? Maybe they would say, "I'm hungry." Or, maybe they aren't feeling well and they would want to tell you to take them to the vet. I know for myself, I would love for my dog to speak to me. Then I could understand why he does what he does to try to get my attention.

On a website called Angelica's Cards, you can find where to buy a deck of cards that you use as if you were using a deck of tarot cards. Here's how it works. The deck of 55 beautiful cards were made by Angelica del Mar. You simply ask the deck of cards a question or a statement pertaining to your pet. An example might be "How are you feeling today?" You then shuffle the cards until your instinct tells you to stop. Just from then lifting up the top two cards of the deck that was just shuffled, you'll find the answer to your question using your own intuition.

So, the next time your dog is not acting like him or herself, grab these cards and you just might find out what is bothering them.
