Don't forget turkey treats for your dog!

Your dog will love celebrating this Thanksgiving with some special turkey treats of his or her own. My dog loves these Turkey Jerky dog treats, available at your local Petco or other pet store, and inexpensive at under $5 per pack.

The number one ingredient in these treats is Turkey, and all of the other seasonings and ingredients are natural. Pick some up (or another turkey treat) for your pup to celebrate the holiday.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Give Your Dog a Massage!

The health benefits of massage are undeniable—increased relaxation, flexibility, and an overall feeling of well-being. Now, your dog can also enjoy these benefits with the Pooch Massoose! This bone-shaped massager (with pawprint nubs!) was designed and developed by Certified Veterinary Chiropractitioner, Dr. Allan Wattenmaker. Dr. Wattenmaker created the Pooch Massoose when his clients asked for a simple, effective way to provide relief and relaxation to their dogs at home.

The Pooch Massoose is easy to use—simply hold it on your dog’s back, hips or shoulders using all 4 ‘paws’, apply gentle pressure and rotate it in circular motions. Signs of bliss that you may see include glazy eyes, licking, or complete, utter surrender!

Jax was the lucky recipient of a blue Pooch Massoose and he has been enjoying the benefits for several weeks. He looks forward to his nightly massage and readily comes when I pick up the “blue bone.”

This bone-shaped massager is just now hitting the markets and Swanky Pup readers can be one of the first to acquire it here and receive a 10% discount by mentioning “Swanky Pup” in your order. During the hustle and bustle of this holiday season, take some time to pamper your four-legged friend with a massage using the Pooch Massoose! For more information, you can also email Dr. Wattenmaker at info@poochmassoose.com.

Woofs & Whiskers Custom Pet Goodies

In this tough economic climate, I am going out of my way to support small businesses and Woofs and Whiskers - a home-based custom pet clothing and accessories business, is just the type of enterprise I love to support. The amazing young woman behind Woofs and Whiskers is Christina, an ardent animal lover, Mom of a handful of rescued doxies and a beagle, a few cats, birds and fish. Three of Christina's dogs are licensed therapy dogs - together they visit the elderly and the sick bringing much needed cheer. Christina is also a wiz in the kitchen and on the sewing machine - so it was the merging of her great love and talents that resulted in Woofs and Whiskers.

Woofs & Whiskers creates top-quality custom items for you and your pet. Christina's attention to detail and special embellishments make her finished items "pawsitively" unique and adorable! Axel, my fox terrier, was the lucky recipient of one of Woof and Whiskers custom collars. The collar has a layer of interfacing inside to make it extra strong and the fabric is sparkly and eye-catching. Christina can custom make your dog or cat's collar with any theme/color in mind - you can choose your own fabric or send her your own. Collars are very reasonably priced between $13 and $17 and she'll even give you a discount if you recycle your old one. In addition to these fetching collars, you can also purchase bows, neckties, bandanas, dresses and bellybands! And the most delightful, warm winter coats.

Between now and January 1st, get free gift wrapping. Shipping for any expenditure over $50 is just $5. Plus, new customers receive a free gift with their purchase. Also check out Woofs and Whiskers gourmet baked treats...to be reviewed soon. Christina is offering SwankyPup readers 20% off their first order - just mention SwankyPup at checkout.

A place to hang your hat, I mean, your leash!

I don't know about you, but my biggest complaint about having a dog is not having enough room for his stuff. He's got jackets, collars, a doggie diaper bag (Pupcentric.com), bones, and lots of leashes. It's like he needs his own closet space.

Well, he's not getting closet space anytime soon, but I did find a website that can help me with containing his leashes into one spot. Pets Unleashed makes wonderful leash holders made of steel. The letters are painted black, and stand
1 and 3/4 inches high. Included with your leash hooks are mounting screws, so there is no need to have search around for a screw that fits.

These holders could easily be placed on a wall in a kitchen, laundry room or mud room. Of course, they are meant to be used to hold dog leashes, but you could also use them for cats and horses or to hang keys, light weight bags, or other items that need a hook.

If you order a leash holder from Pets Unleashed before December 1st, all shipping is free. Would this make a great gift for the holidays or what?!?!.

Housebreaking troubles? Clean those carpet stains the right way!

If you have one spot in your house that your dog consistently pees on, or other dogs come to your house and always are sniffing around the same spots, you probably are not cleaning your carpets with the right product! While many carpet cleaners can make urine stains on your carpet invisible to us, dogs can still smell the urine in that spot which can lead to annoying marking behaviors.

Urine Off is the industry-preferred carpet cleaner and urine remover in the pet industry. Used in the Crufts Dog Show ring to treat any accidents that might occur and at kennels throughout the country - this is a must-have product in your home too. By removing uric salt crystals that bond to your carpet and are not removed by normal carpet cleaners, it can remove stains and the scent of urine (for both dogs and humans). The spray has a light citrus scent and after you spray it liberally on the stain it dries and disappears, taking the stain along with it.

If your dog has had accidents on your carpet leaving behinds smells and stains, or if you are housebreaking a new pooch Urine Off is a great product for you. Find Urine Off on GWLittle.com on sale for only $11.99.

I'm excited to see Marley & Me!

I can't wait for Christmas Day to go and see Marley and Me with my family. Based on the best-selling book and with Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson, the movie chronicles the story of Marley, a yellow lab that the couple adopts after they get married. Watching the puppy (and family) grow is heartwarming and funny. Check out the trailer and enjoy!

Healthy Little Bites

I was a bit cynical when I brought home Olive Organic Little Berry Bites treats for Axel. My dog has a penchant for singling out healthy snacks and rejecting them. He is a Milkbones, Pupperoni type of guy. We still buy Milkbones but I've been trying to go healthy for a while.

Little Berry Bites are manufactured by Olive. They are made of 100% natural ingredients like organic rolled oats, organic cranberries and blueberries, unsweetend applesauce, raw honey, and organic ground cinnamon and cloves. Wheat, corn and soy free. No artificial colors, flavors or preservatives of any kind. The range comes in three additional flavors - Nutty 'Nanners, My Oh My Pizza Pie, and Happy Apple Snacks.

I can only tell you that Axel LOVED these snacks. He gobbled them up like they were fries from McDonalds. Each 8 oz package retails for approximately $7.95. Olive also sells an Organic Cookie Treat Gift Set which includes all four popular Olive organic dog snacks neatly tucked in an organic cotton cinchpack for $29.99.

Did you find your animal?

I have written a lot of product reviews since I started writing for this website, but none of my reviews have ever helped another cause, until now.

I recently found a website called Found My Animal. This website sells rope FOUND leashes for your pup and the best part is that 25% of the profits go to the Louis Animal Foundation (more about that later) . The rope is made from heavy duty material and come in a variety of lengths to best fit your friend. Each rope is hand spliced by professional New England rope makers. The ends of the rope are "whipped" for additional durability.

What I love best about the FOUND leash is that the hardware on the leash allows you to use it in the following ways:
1. as a simple hand held leash
2. around your waist allowing you to walk hands free
3. over your shoulder or across your chest
4. to clip your animal to a fence, tree or post without worrying about the security of a knot.

Each of the leashes also come with a brass tag that has a number on it. This number signifies the number of animals that have been helped.

As mentioned above, 25% of the profits goes to the Louis Animal Foundation. This foundation is a non-profit group that is dedicated to spaying/neutering and providing homes for animals that have not found their people yet. In my opinion, this is a good thing.

So, if you are in the market for a new leash for your dog, or you need a gift for the holidays, check out the Found My Animal website. Buy a FOUND leash and feel good that some of the money spent is going to help a great cause.

I Pick Up!

Picking up poop. Not the most glamorous part of being a dog parent. In the past, I’ve typically used plastic grocery bags to dispose of Jax’s waste. While I always prided myself for being a responsible pet parent, I recently learned that these bags actually are not environmentally friendly. In my effort to become greener, I found a way to pick up poop stylishly and help the environment with The Kemp. This smart, hand-made, eco-friendly bag was created by Bibi Rogers at 4U2ReUSE and is designed to conveniently attach to a leash or belt loop.

The Kemp is available in two sizes—Petit, holds up to 10 biodegradable bags and Grande, holds up to 14 biodegradable bags as well a cell phone and keys. Each Kemp is made from completely organic fabrics and re-used materials such as vintage clothing or defective/non-repairable kite boarding sails. Bibi is committed to promoting sustainability stating, “I also use local materials and fabric providers to cut down on shipping, energy consumption and other operational waste in the manufacturing process.” The Kemp comes in a variety of colors such as Burberry Denim, Rainbow Denim and Blue Kite. Get The Kemp here for $22 with free shipping on all orders!

Silence those tags!

I can hear my dog coming from a mile away. How? From the jingling of his tags! He wears a rabies tag and an ID tag on his collar and as he moves the two of them bang in to each other and jingle with every step he takes and it drives me a little crazy. Recently I discovered Quiet Spot Pet Tag Silencers which have truly solved this issue for good!

The Quiet Spot Tag Silencer is made of soft, weatherproof Neoprene and all you have to do to silence your pup's tags is insert them in the pocket and Velcro it shut! It is sturdy but lightweight so that it will be comfortable for your dog to wear all year round and it even has a reflective logo on the front to make walking at night safer.

So if the jingling of your dog's tags is driving you nuts, try the Quiet Spot Pet Tag Silencer for some much needed quiet in your life!

Fabulous Bags With Some Doggie Flair

Do you need a bag that is made of recycled leather, looks great and is totally functional? Well you should check out the bags from ReFIND Originals.

The Woof Pack bags are for the young and old. They are a small backpack that come with many different color combinations. Each bag comes with adjustable straps and a zipper for closure at the top. There is ample room on the inside of the bag for whatever you need to bring with you.

My favorite parts of the bag is the fact that it is a backpack, so you are able to have your hands free and it won't slide off your shoulder. In addition, each one of the bags from ReFIND Originals are made from recycled leather products. What a great way to take care of the earth and make something so beautiful that is so well made.

Photographic Tribute "To the Dogs"

I am fortunate that my dear neighbor Bill is a book seller. Tonight he knocked on my door to hand me a beautiful hardcover coffee-table book called, To the Dogs by Peter Culley.

The book features 150 full-page photographs, including 50 in color - images are extremely varied. Some shots include local dog shows, a Moscow circus, a dogfight in Sarajevo, and a dog hotel in Japan. My favorites include, "Alchoholic Living Alone with Dog" - it captures the bond between the bedraggled, old man and his skinny greyhound as they exchange a kiss; and "Wheeler" - Man and dog on rail cart trip from Shelton to Nome, Alaska, 1912.

A description of the book is as follows: "The history of the relationship between canines and humans is more complex than one would think. From Sparta to Stalingrad, the dogs of war, cleanup, guard duty, and companionship have been at our side; their loyalty knows no bounds, whether they are beloved pets or guardians of riot police or unsavory fight fans.
From companion to full-fledged member of the tribe, the dog has irrevocably moved into our homes, hearts, and minds to such an extent that the boundaries between “owner” and “pet” have dissolved. The historical and contemporary photographs of To the Dogs explore this human-canine connection in ways that are alternately surprising, endearing, disturbing, and beautiful."

A wonderfully written essay accompanies the photos. Written by poet Peter Culley, "it explores the international citizenry of dogs, and why they can tell us more about ourselves and our culture than we care to admit."

To the Dogs is currently on sale at Amazon.com - reduced from $32.95 to $24.05. A lovely addition to any book collection or the perfect holiday gift.

Fun holiday cards

I love taking pictures of my furry kids and putting it in fun Christmas cards but it's hard to find something really unique. This year I struck gold with River Wolf Art Gallery. They have various cards that are created by printing their original artwork and where else can I find Belgian Malinois cards? The set of 10 same image art notecards are printed in full color on quality white heavy bond paper. Ivory colored envelopes are included. Card size is 4.1/4 x 5.5 inches, and has printed inside in red. I ordered the cards below and they are absolutely beautiful. They are usually $12.00 for a set of 10 with shipping depending on where you live.

Obama's getting a family dog!

Last night during Obama's speech he discussed making many changes, and honoring promises. One promise he made to his children is that they will get a new puppy when they move into the White House. So exciting!

A fun book I found about White House dogs is "American Presidents and their Best Friends." The book introduces such memorable characters as FDR's Scottie, Fala, who attended the signing of the Atlantic Charter aboard the cruiser Augusta; Millie, Bush's springer spaniel, who dictated her own bestselling memoir; and Lincoln's mongrel, Fido, who sadly suffered the same fate as his master.

It will be interesting to see what kind of dog the Obama's will pick for their family and how that pooch will add character to the White House!

American Pride

No matter the outcome this election day, I am proud to be an American. And of course, so is my dog. So to show it, I plan to outfit her in this adorable BandaBling "100% American Pure Bred" bandana.

Show you’re proud to be an American in a red or navy bandana trimmed with red, white and blue flag ribbon. A stunning patriotic flag applique and a variety of patriotic silver charms show the ultimate in American pride.

Of course there are tons of other bandana styles to choose from, from trendy, to classic, to European, and more. Bandabling puts a new twist on the traditional pet bandana, adding a snap closure for easy on and off. The bandanas are available in a range of sizes and are made in the USA.
